Green Chemistry: The Breakfast of the Year

If you hated chemistry in high school, you will not want to miss the next NSTC breakfast on July 27. In fact, hypothetically speaking, if you could attend only one NSTC breakfast a year, this  would have to be it.
It’s about Green Chemistry and if that sounds too “sciencey” for you, don’t despair.  You will be treated to some amazing insights from the very father of this critical field.  But take heart – Dr John Warner started college a few decades ago as a music major. He was acting like a free radical long before he was studying them.

Sure, John Warner is responsible for the 12 Principles of Green Chem, he’s been recognized by presidents and prime ministers, and he probably has more patents than pants…but we promise you will leave that breakfast inspired and informed, without the slightest nod to the Periodic table.
Of course, even you engineers and scientists out there will have a lot to think about.

Chemist: Heal Thyself


Our speaker today packed a wallop! In the 80’s he was that ordinary UMass Boston kid, a music major with his own band -- undoubtedly playing late nights at Bunratty’s and the Rat, with the beer-soaked sneakers to prove it. Today, he’s considered the father of Green Chemistry. No ordinary nerd, Dr John Warner is friends with presidents, prime ministers and corporate heads around the world. Although he’s been tapped by Swarzenegger to help California escape this toxic chemical world we’ve created, he told our Sustainability Forum today: “Massachusetts has the clear opportunity to emerge as the Silicon Valley of Sustainability.”

John stated that the most prominent chemist at the most prominent institution could not identify a safe molecule vs a toxic one. Our chemists are woefully unprepared to create safer, healthier materials. It’s not some corporate conspiracy or even a political bias. It’s simply an embedded institutional approach to creating complex materials that neglects a fundamental emphasis on toxicity. Advancements in complex polymers are astounding; they create new fuels, more efficient building materials and longer-lasting nail polishes. Chemists construct safeguards, and keep pace with a continual mountain of laws and policies. But Green Chemistry, surprisingly, is just emerging.

China and India get it. Their chemistry students are required to take a year of toxicology. Our kids are smart. But there is not a single undergrad in the US who is expected to understand this critical part of nanotechnology.

John will tell you that his text books at UMass aren’t much different than 30 years later. It’s a sad indictment of government, research and academia. There’s good news though: John…through his books, the WarnerBabcock Institute, his membership on the American Chemical Society, his patents, his consultations with world leaders…is changing chemistry.

He’s just a regular guy who is having a profound impact on the molecules that surround is. It’s an amazing story: from the Kenmore Square Rathskellar to laboratories worldwide.

The New Economic Frontier




We spoke with Dr. John Warner, considered one of the founding fathers of Green Chemistry, for some insight into his presentation coming up on August 4. “This is the new economic frontier,” Warner said. “Sustainability is a real consumer driver today and this region has the opportunity to be the Silicon Valley of nanotechnology.”

“Massachusetts is massively on the winning side of research grants,” Warner says, “but little of that is creating jobs.” The clear opportunity here is to develop a better collaboration between business and academia in this critical field.

Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, and use. (see 12 principles of Green Chemistry)

Dr Warner will provide the Sustainability Forum with a primer on Green Chem – its intrinsic importance to sustainability and its vast impact on materials, pollution, energy and health. But what may be of particular interest is Warner’s perspective on the tangible economics benefits available to local businesses here in our region.

Next Forum Meeting: Green Chemistry


Founding Father of Green Chemistry, Dr. John Warner, to deliver presentation on this revolutionary new approach to the way that products are made.

Green Chemistry is a science that aims to reduce or eliminate the use and/or generation of hazardous substances in the design phase of materials development.

Green Chemistry follows the principle that it is better to consider waste prevention options during the design and development phase than to dispose or treat waste after a process or material has been developed.
